The Mint of Finland have issued a silver coin to honor one of their most well known and celebrated scientists, Pehr Kalm (1716-1779). He is considered to be the most famous Finnish representative of the Enlightenment.
The silver coin was designed by Erkki Vainio. The obverse features a depiction of Pehr Kalm surveying the Niagara Falls from the Canadian side. The reverse of the coin depicts a stlized and subtly colored image of “Kalmia Latifolia”. Often called Mountain-laurel, it is the state flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania and named after Kalm.
